As humanity picks up the pieces, following the conclusion of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Autobots and Decepticons have all but vanished from the face of the planet. However, a group of powerful, ingenious businessman and scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control – all while an ancient, powerful Transformer menace sets Earth in his crosshairs. Shia LaBeouf will not return for this film (Variety, 10-17-11). The fourth and fifth installments could be headed into production back-to-back (Variety, 10-17-11). Screenwriter Ehren Kruger is said to have an idea for the next installments that the studio is very interested in (Variety, 10-17-11). Michael Bay's first Transformers film was a box office sensation in 2007, opening at #1 and earning more than $700 million worldwide. His second installment Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009 grossed more than $830 million worldwide. In 2011, Transformers: Dark of the Moon was an even bigger hit worldwide, grossing more than a billion dollars to become the 5th highest grossing film of all time. To date, the franchise has earned more than $2.6 billion worldwide.
